Magnet Schools Transportation
On April 7 at the monthly meeting of the Duval County School Board, the following changes will be made to the transportation of Duval County Magnet students beginning August 2009:
- For elementary magnet students, the distance between a bus stop and home will change from one (1) mile to one and one-half (1 1/2) miles; or, an elementary magnet student may have to walk (or be transported by the parent) up to two (2) miles to the neighborhood school for a stop.
- "Express Routes" will replace morning and afternoon direct routes into neighborhoods for non-dedicated middle and high school magnet programs and for middle and high school dedicated magnet schools in the afternoon. "Express Route" stops will be at or near schools. The nearest school may be more than one and one-half (1 ½) miles away from home.
- Stops for after-school activity buses for middle and high school magnet students will be at or near schools or locations in the community.

Magnet Transportation Q & A
Transportation FAQ 2009-2010
Elementary schools are divided into seven transportation zones and middle schools are divided into two zones. Transportation is provided to any elementary student living in the same zone that their magnet school is located. Also, some elementary magnet schools provide transportation to students living outside of their zones. You will see these schools listed with the elementary zone maps.
Transportation is also provided to middle and high school students who apply by the deadline. Middle Schools are divided into Zone A and Zone B. Zone A middle schools are Arlington, Fletcher, Gilbert, Kernan, Landmark, Mayport, Ribault, Southside and Twin Lakes. Zone B middle schools are Baldwin, Butler, Jeff Davis, DuPont, Highlands, Mandarin, Northwestern, Oceanway, Paxon, Stilwell and Stuart. Transportation to most middle school magnet programs is provided to students who live in Zone A and Zone B. Fort Caroline's transportation zone is limited to Zone A and Lake Shore's transportation zone is Zone B.
Bus stops and times are subject to change for the 2009-2010 school year. Review the current bus routes with your school's bus coordinator to find a stop within one mile of the location you would like. Current bus routes may be viewed at www.duvalschools.org. Bus coordinators are listed at www.magnetprograms.com. The Duval County Public Transportation Department may be reached at 858-6200.
To be eligible for transportation, students must apply to a magnet school by the February 27, 2009, application deadline. Generally, transportation is provided to elementary students who reside within a zone that is served by the magnet school they attend.
Those who apply to a magnet school located outside of or not serving their zone will not be provided transportation if selected for admission. For more information, call the bus coordinator at the magnet school the student wishes to attend.
