Gifted and Academically Talented
Our highly trained faculty provides a variety of both group and individual learning opportunities that help prepare students to succeed in college preparatory courses. The rigorous, standards-based curriculum is designed for academically gifted and advanced students. Emphasis is placed on team building, problem solving, critical thinking and creativity. It is our diverse student population in an educationally rich environment that has created the Darnell-Cookman tradition of excellence.

Medical Professions/Health Care
Students in the Medical Professions/Health Care magnet at Darnell-Cookman are enrolled in gifted or advanced academic classes. Medical course work is provided during the student's elective class period. The curriculum includes opportunities for hands-on simulated medical procedures, career exploration, field trips and guest speakers.

Tours: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:15 p.m. from January 15 through February 26 except February 12 and February 14.

Open House: Gifted Open House January 17, 7 p.m. and Academically Talented Open House January 28, 7 p.m.

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP)
As a part of the Magnet Schools Assistance Program Grant, Ft. Caroline is just beginning the process of becoming affiliated with the International Baccalaureate's Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP offers an accelerated honors program for highly motivated and academically talented students. Students who enter Fort Caroline Middle School in the sixth grade will participate in a rigorous academic program that will focus on five major themes: Approaches to Learning, The Environment, Health and Social Awareness, Community Service, and Man the Maker. Seventh and eighth grade students will also benefit from a dedicated staff of highly qualified professionals committed to "Preparing students for the world that they are about to inherit."

Special Information: SOARS (Social Opportunities for Activities and Recreation) and TEAM UP will be available for students in all grade levels. Middle Years Career Exploration Academy
Matthew Gilbert offers students the opportunity to maximize academic achievement while guiding them to explore occupations and make informed high school decisions concerning their future career choices. While focusing on science, technology and communications broadcasting, we have integrated career exploration into every classroom. This school offers students the answer to the age-old question of "Why do we have to learn this?" by showing real-world connections to each new concept being taught.

Aviation and Military Science Academy
"Take Flight to Your Future" as a student at Highlands Aviation and Military Science Academy (HAMSA). Our middle school curriculum is combined with fascinating aviation and military-science topics that enrich students' learning experiences. An aviation ground-school elective puts students in the cockpit of on-site flight simulators. Radio-controlled planes, rockets and models are used to teach the principles and concepts of flight. The military-science elective focuses on military history, leadership and career opportunities. Students develop team-building skills and improved personal fitness in the personal-training elective by using a variety of gym equipment, including a rock-climbing wall and ROPES course. A band, including a drum line and flag corps, and student government are among the extracurricular activities available for student participation.

Tours: January 23, February 6 and 20, 9:30 a.m.-12 noon.

Open House: Saturday, February 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Thursday, February 7, 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

Special Information: Before- and after-school programs are available. Students are required to wear a school uniform consisting of a school shirt, khaki pants with belt and black shoes. Summer enrichment camps are available for HAMSA magnet students at no cost.

Gifted and Academically Talented
James Weldon Johnson offers only advanced and gifted core subjects, preparing students to excel in a rigorous high school program of study. Students are exposed to physical education, health and a myriad of electives including art, band, dance, TV production, computers, drama, world languages and reading. Johnson stresses a total-school experience for all students through participation in various extracurricular academic and athletic activities.

Tours: Every Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. (except February 12) and every Thursday, 8:30 a.m. (except February 14). Tours begin January 15 and end February 28.

Open House: Academically Talented Open House is Tuesday, January 22, 6:30 p.m. Gifted Open House is Tuesday, February 5, 6:30 p.m.

Math/Science/Technology/Pre-Engineering and Gifted
To prepare students for college preparatory courses at the high school level, KSMS offers advanced, gifted and standard classes in the core academic areas. This program is designed to meet the needs of highly talented students who plan to continue their education in the fields of science, mathematics, computer science, technology or engineering. Special advanced and gifted team electives may include astronomy, our new aquaculture class, forensics, logic, advanced genetics, geometry and chemistry as well as a rich elective program including robotics, video-game design, computer applications, engineering technology, TV production, art (with computer-aided design) digital photography and Spanish. Kirby-Smith also offers gifted math, science and technology as separate programs.

Tours: Every Thursday at 7:45 a.m. from January 10 to February 28 with NO tour on February 14 due to the FCAT writing test.

Open House: Sunday, February 10, 2 p.m.- 4 p.m.

As a part of the Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant, Lake Shore is just beginning the process of becoming affiliated with International Baccalaureate's Middle Years Programme (MYP). Lake Shore Middle School provides support for the mental, physical, and social development of our students during the critical transition period from childhood to adolescence. The MYP fosters critical thinking and exposes students to world culture, creating an environment that promotes a high standard for academics while also encouraging acceptance of diversity. Our faculty and staff believe that all students can achieve a high level of academic success. By building the stamina to meet high standards and developing an understanding of the global community around them, our students are prepared to excel at the high school of their choice.

College Preparatory and Leadership Development
As a part of the new Magnet Schools Assistance Program Grant, the Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School will challenge students academically through a rigorous program of study designed to help prepare tomorrow's leaders to be competitive in the ever changing global community. Students will be scheduled in gifted or advanced core classes taught by a highly qualified staff. In addition to the core course offerings, an emphasis will be placed on leadership development through grade specific leadership electives. Traditional elective courses will also be available. The culmination of each student's middle school experience will be participation in the Eighth Grade Leadership Symposium.

Tours: January 17, 6 p.m.; January 24, 6 p.m.; February 14th, 6 p.m.; February 21, 6 p.m.

Open House: Tuesday, January 15 and Thursday, January 31, 6 p.m.

Special Information: Principal's signature is only given after attending a tour or open house. The school is proposed to become a dedicated magnet school for 2008-2009. All students must apply to attend. Students not already staffed as gifted may apply for the academically talented (advanced) program. Students who live in the current attendance area of Landon Middle School will receive "Priority 1" for admission through the magnet lottery. Students currently attending the school on the No Child Left Behind Transfer Option do not have to reapply. Because of its participation in the Magnet Schools Assistance Program Grant, this school is designated as a magnet school choice option for students who live in the attendance area of five (5) Title 1 middle schools.

Visual and Performing Arts
Highly qualified professionals offer instruction in band, chorus, dance, drama, piano, orchestra, guitar, creative writing and visual arts in a program designed for both beginning and advanced students. Standard, honors, gifted and ESE classes accommodate students who receive two periods of arts instruction each day in addition to the core curriculum
