Utilization of Magnet Schools
The school district strives to have the utilization of all schools between 85% and 105% of their current capacity. The 2011-2012 Utilization of each magnet school helps determine the number of new magnet openings a school may offer for the 2012-2013 magnet lottery.

Special Information: Transportation, Distribution & Logistics Cluster – Automotive Academy and Aviation/Aerospace Technology Academy. The Automotive, Diesel, Automotive Collision Refinishing, Aviation, Aerospace, Automation and Production courses are designed to introduce students to Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications, FAA Pilot Ground School industry certifications, General Maintenance/Airframe, Air Traffic Control college credits and the exposure to aircraft, automobile and shipbuilding manufacturing technologies. Upon successfully passing the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) industry certification in Certified Logistics Technician (CPT) students may earn up to 15 college credits while still in high school. Students will be prepared to enter college and/or the workforce with industry certifications and specializations in a selected career pathway.

Agriscience Biotechnology
The Agriscience Biotechnology program will teach students how to use science to increase effectiveness of living organisms. The program begins with a course in Agricultural Science and progresses to Agriscience Biotechnology. Emphasis will be on cellular biology and genetics as well as current trends and methods in biotechnology and the application of valid scientific principles. The field of biotechnology is growing rapidly providing numerous career opportunities.

Automotive Academy
Master-certified instructors will prepare students for college and careers in the automotive industry. Students are eligible for on-the-job training, mentorships and internships. Students will train in an advanced facility that includes a computerized diagnostic laboratory and gain real-life experience by training in a facility that serves the public. The Automotive Academy areas of concentration are Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology and Collision and Refinishing. Students will be prepared to receive Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification.

Aviation/Aerospace Technology Academy
The Aviation Maintenance course is designed to introduce students to aircraft maintenance. Students learn the basics such as general hangar and shop safety, aircraft tools, environmental concerns, mathematics, physics and basic aerodynamics. In addition, students will gain knowledge in more complex precision measuring instruments, blueprints and drawings, hand and power tools, electricity and DC electrical circuits, federal aviation regulations, publications and records, AC electrical systems, weight and balance, aircraft ground operations and servicing. Aerospace Technology and Aviation Maintenance courses are required for academy completion.

Communications Academy
Students prepare for industry certification in a wide range of fields offered through the "Adobe" industry certification program, and are also eligible for on-the-job training through internships. Our Television Production program includes a state-of-the-art production studio, digital editing, computer imaging, and digital sound. Commercial Art includes training in vinyl and computer graphics, animation, comic illustration, and advertising design. Web Design students produce websites for the fast-paced Internet using Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop. Many of our students continue their education at colleges or technical institutes.

Cosmetology Academy
Students learn all aspects of cosmetology in a modern, fully equipped salon open to the public. Upon completion of required hours and services, the student is eligible to become a licensed cosmetologist in the State of Florida. Hours, services and curriculum are mandated by both the Department of Education and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. We encourage all students to prepare for the cosmetology licensure. Certifications in Nail Technology and Esthetics are also available. The primary entry point for the Cosmetology Academy is 9th grade. There are a limited number of seats available for 11th and 12th grades.

Culinary Arts Academy
Students who graduate from the Culinary Arts Program can receive certification in ProStart and ServSafe; both are industry standards. Peterson has a full-service restaurant that is open to the public. Students cook, bake and serve while studying the front and back of the house. Students must purchase a chef jacket, pants, chef’s hat and shoes which are required attire. Graduates may continue their training at the college level or a culinary institute.

Early Childhood Education (ECE)
This program is a Certified National Career Academy providing students with FSCJ dual enrollment, Department of Children Certification (40 hours and Early Childhood Education Professional Certificate), CPR and first aid training. Students will be prepared to achieve state certification in infant and toddler, preschool, school age and special needs. The student's education is enhanced by hands-on experience in Peterson's onsite childcare facility that serves the community. Students may participate in an on-the-job training program to earn class credits. Field trips, speakers, community workshops, and job shadowing are also offered as student enrichment.

Special Information: A. Philip Randolph (APR) is a career and college preparatory magnet school. Every student is enrolled in one of the six career programs that are offered: Energy, Manufacturing and Construction (EMC); Cosmetology; Health Science; Information Technology; Health/Fire & Rescue and Public Safety/Criminal Justice. Primary entry point is 9th grade. Admission to a program in 10th, 11th or 12th grade is dependent upon successful completion of prior year’s coursework as verified by the principal’s signature on the magnet application. This is necessary in order to ensure that the student is able to complete the certification associated with the academy to which application is being made. Magnet application signatures are given by the principal or his designee only after a school tour. Call to schedule your personal tour at one of the times listed above.

Cosmetology Academy
The Cosmetology Academy prepares students for employment as licensed cosmetologists, licensed nail specialists, licensed facial specialists and licensed full specialists (nails and facials). The academy educates students with skills in communication, business management, leadership, human relations, employability and entrepreneurship. Instruction is designed to help students pass the Florida cosmetology licensed examination or industry certification.

Energy, Manufacturing and Construction (EMC) Academy
Energy, Manufacturing and Construction have joined together to prepare students for a wide variety of challenging and rewarding careers that are vital to our economy. This academy is designed to help meet the need for qualified construction professionals in the community. Areas of study available to students are carpentry and masonry, CAD drafting, plumbing and pipe trades, industrial electricity, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and manufacturing.

Health/Fire and Rescue Technology Academy
The Health/Fire and Rescue, technology Academy prepares students for a career in Firefighting or Emergency Medical Services. Students have the opportunity to participate in the Explorers Program and acquire hands-on, real-world experience. Academy content includes orientation to the fire service, fire alarms and communication, vehicle apparatus and equipment, fire behavior, portable extinguishers, principles of in-service inspections, safety, and controlled burning. Employability skills is also a focus of the program.

Health Science Academy
The Health Science Academy provides students with rigorous academic training, complemented by real-world experiences in area hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers and other health care agencies. The academy gives students hands-on experiences in careers from each of the health career clusters: therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services and biotechnology and research. The programs offered are Certified Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Health Unit Coordinator, Electrocardiography (EKG), Aide and Allied Health Assistant. Students are prepared for a smooth transition into the workforce or post-secondary education. Students must be able to clear a background check in order to participate in the clinicals and to sit for CNA or CMA examinations.

Information Technology Academy
The Information Technology Academy prepares students for college and careers in computer technology. Courses of study include CISCO, computer maintenance, programming, network maintenance, computer applications, website and Internet/Intranet development. These courses are integrated into the student's chosen career area, and successful students are eligible for on-the-job training and industry certifications. The core academic courses are integrated with the student's chosen career area.

Public Safety/Criminal Justice Academy
The Public Safety/Criminal Justice Academy emphasizes community-service officer, private security and corrections training. The training allows high school graduates to seek employment while they continue their education at a community college or university to become law enforcement or probation officers. The training is also a significant head start for those students interested in law or social work. The Public Safety/Criminal Justice Academy is the only program in the state the certifies the high school student as having met the requirements for a Florida Class “D” unarmed security license. The successful student also receives a vocational certificate in criminal justice and American Red Cross certification in first aid, CPR and AED
